Safaricom Telecommunications Ethiopia PLC recently highlighted the significant role that enhanced telecom infrastructure can play in unlocking the full potential of East Africa’s tourism industry. At the 4th Oromia Tourism Week, CEO Wim Vanhelleputte participated in a panel discussion with notable industry leaders, including H.E. Commissioner Lelise Duga and Frank Gisha. The conversation focused on the challenges tourists face, such as limited rural network coverage, inconsistent roaming standards, and fragmented digital services, which disrupt the travel experience.
Vanhelleputte emphasized that seamless regional integration in the tourism sector requires reliable mobile networks and high-speed internet in tourist hotspots. He pointed out that roaming issues, including cost and availability, often hinder travelers from accessing real-time information. He stressed the need for a collaborative approach between governments, telecom operators, and the tourism industry to improve digital connectivity across borders. Addressing these issues would significantly enhance the tourist experience and drive growth in East Africa’s tourism sector.
